Changing Makeup of Academic Library Collections

Stephanie Wittenbach, TAMU-SA, Thursday, 2/18/10, 9:30 a.m.

The library is a growing organism. Students changing. Libraries need to remain current to keep up with changing needs. Librarians changing to discovery assistance.

Print collections declining. Electronic increasing.

Acquisition should be based on potential use rather than something they should have.

How to position libraries
  • better analyze use patterns
  • help vendors create discovery systems
  • librarians become more comfortable with technologoes
Faculty are slow to embrace electronic collections.
